Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is one of the most common sleeping disorders and is characterised by repeated interruptions to your breathing during sleep.

Sleep apnea
Consistent lack of oxygen supply to the body means interrupted, poor quality sleep and can have numerous effects on the lives of sufferers.

The effects of sleep apnea can include, waking tired, poor concentration and memory, headaches, depression, high blood pressure, cardiac concerns, diabetes and in some cases can be life-threatening. Heavy and regular snoring is one of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea and like snoring, sleep apnea is caused by the body’s inability to draw oxygen through the windpipes.

Lifestyle changes like limiting consumption of drugs and alcohol, and weight loss can lead to significant improvements. Sleep posture is also an important factor as anything that restricts the airways (like a pillow that is too high) can worsen the disorder. Elevation of the upper body can aid in keeping the airways as open as possible though it is important that this is achieved correctly. Simply propping yourself up with a concoction of pillows and cushions can lead to poor posture and interruptions to sleep due to the need for constant rearrangement.

Ask a back to sleep team member how a posture change or adjustable base may help alleviate the severity of sleep apnea. Please feel free to book in with one of our dedicated product specialists to discuss your sleep support needs.

Please note that sleep apnea is a serious condition that requires diagnosis and guidance from a specialised medical professional. While back to sleep has helped numerous people make dramatic improvements to their condition, our specialists cannot and will not diagnose, treat or cure sleep apnea.
