Snoring is the awful noise created when air struggles to make its way through the windpipes as you sleep.

Vibration of the soft tissues lining the air passages is caused by the narrowing or blockage of these pathways. Similar to sleep apnea, snoring can affect a person’s sleep quality and lead to issues like tiredness, lack of concentration, hormone imbalance, weight gain, negative moods and poor decision making.

Snoring is the most common symptom of sleep apnea and like snoring, sleep apnea is caused by the body’s inability to draw oxygen through the windpipes. Roughly one in two snorers also have undiagnosed sleep apnea which has even more significant effects than snoring alone.

Lifestyle changes like limiting consumption of drugs and alcohol, and weight loss can lead to significant improvements. Sleep posture is also an important factor as anything that restricts the airways (like a pillow that is too high) can worsen the disorder.

Elevation of the upper body can aid in keeping the airways as open as possible though it is important that this is achieved correctly. Simply propping yourself up with a concoction of pillows and cushions can lead to poor posture and interruptions to sleep due to the need for constant rearrangement.
